Travel around the world in celebration of The International Women's Day

The traditional celebration of International Women's Day, organized by CAS “Djerdan”, was held on Saturday March 15th, 2014 at 1000 Byron Ave. in Ottawa.
Every year CAS “Djerdan” prepares a diverse program that includes all members of the organization. This year's event was multicultural, offering something new for all of our audience members.
Through song and dance we explored different parts of the world; from Bosnia to India, to Mexico, to Canada.
The program was lead by Jasmina and Mersiha, who entertained guests and impressed them with their professionalism.
Following the introductory speech, our lovely MCs announced the first performance:
The adult members of CAS „Djerdan“ performed a forkloric dance called 'Dances from Sarajevo' choreographed by Amra Vukičević. Dressed in beautiful traditional Bosnian costumes, the group sang a song called 'At the center of Sarajevo' which set the scene of the 'bascarsija' in the heart of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Hercegovina. The performance recieved a loud applause and was followed by a dance from the Eastern Indian cultural group 'Darpan'.
Members of Darpan wore exotic Indian saris, and thrilled the audience with their dances to music full of emotion. Through their gracefull yet powerful movements, they told stories of love that resonated with everyone.
From there our travelling continued....
Jasmina and Mersiha returned to introduce the youngest members 'Djerdan Kids'. The children's group put a lot of effort into their performance. They danced to the song „Caj Sukarije“ sang by Zdravko Colic a legend in Bosnian music. Djerdan Kids, as always, managed to impress the audience, their choreographer Amra Vukičević and most importantly their parents of which some were unable to hide their tears of pride and joy.
From there, the audience was transported to Mexico by the cultural group 'Viva Mexico', who danced in multicoloured costumes which portrayed the beauty of their homeland and culture. Viva Mexico invited everyone to join in and dance with them. Jasmina and Mersiha thanked the guests in Spanish: ''Muchas gracias mexicanos!''
The best, was of course, saved for last and the newest group of young Djerdan members danced to the song Lamabada choreographed by Amra Vukičević.
Mersiha and Jasmina returned to announce the end of the cultural part of the program, and to introduce the beginning of the fun part which was filled with performances by the very talented members of CAS „Djerdan“. This part of the program also included a special guest - belly dancer, Mayada Shimmy as well as the very famous duo Bato & Tvrtko.
Through song and dance, and of course some good Bosnian cuisine, the fun lasted well into the night. However, every good journey must come to an end, but the members of CAS “Djerdan” will do their best to take you on another journey in the near future….

Happy birthday Bosnia and Herzegovina
2013 is a jubilee year for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as the country celebrated its 70th birthday. The BiH National Day celebration organized by members of CAS Djerdan has become a tradition in Ottawa. The event is possible due to the volunteer efforts of the members who come together to mark November 25th.
This year the central Statehood Day celebration was held on the ninth of November at 1000 Byron Avenue, beginning at 20:00 pm. As with most Djerdan events, the majority of the supporters were members of the Bosnian-Herzegovinians community in Ottawa.
The members of CAS Djerdan had the honor of hosting representatives of the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as the President of the Turkish community in Ottawa, Dr. Edip Yauz Zeybek . Dr. Zeybek expressed his gratitude and in an email to Djerdan wrote that he was thrilled with the cultural program and that the next event hosted will see many members of the Turkish community, allowing for the two communities to interact together.
At this cultural manifestation CAS Djedan’s goal was to present historical folk customs as teach the younger generations about their culture. This year, the event showcased members of all ages as they performed ‘corn husking’. The performance included acting, singing, jokes and of course, dancing. The show was celebrated with much applause, the best reward for all the hard work of the members of Djerdan.
At the end of the program, the chairman of CAS Djerdan Ms. Alma Ledenko, thanked the guests who came to celebrate the 25th of November and introduced the evening’s final entertainment: the " Suki Band " .
It was then that the fun really started, as the Djerdan members dancing in their national costumes were joined by the audience.
Fun was had by all late into the night!

March 8 – International Women’s Day
An event that KUD Djerdan celebrates every year is the International Women’s Day. As usual, this year’s manifestation was organized by hardworking members of KUD Djerdan and many devoted volunteers. All their efforts showed perfectionism and professionalism starting with a beautifully decorated hall to a cultural program on stage.
Celebration started in a festive atmosphere among all the guests and KUD members. Ajla Vugdalić i Mirza Lončar opened the program with a short welcome speech, once again remembering the importance of this holiday.
Among the invitees, KUD Djerdan was honoured to have present the representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including H. E. the Ambassador, Ms. Biljana Gutić-Bjelica. Ms. Gutić-Bjelica addressed the crowd with a short speech, emphasizing her delight that the International Women’s Day is celebrated by Bosnian-Herzegovinians in Canada.
Shortly after the speech from the Ambassador, the cultural program prepared by KUD Djerdan has started. There was an abundance of performers of all ages on stage doing what they do best – act, dance and, of course, smile! All their acts were acclaimed like never before. As usual, “Djerdan Kids” received the most praise as they danced and recited poetry in honour of their own and all other mothers.
The entirety of the program was closely supervised by Ms. Amra Vukičević, choreographer. She was responsible for all senior members’ dance choreographies as well as all the kids’ performances. For a spectacularly humoristic stage play of the senior members, which brought many of the audience members to tears, Ms. Jasminka Kušmić was the main culprit.
After the cultural program, everyone had a chance to try some of the Bosnian cuisine delicacies and enjoy the rest of the night in company of Ms. Samira Grbović – Sani and the “Tajna Veza” band.
